Weight Loss Medications

Weight loss drugs can bring about more than just weight loss.

Combined with a well-balanced diet and an exercise program, weight loss medication can lower your risks to high blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases.

These FDA-approved drugs are prescribed to obese people whose weight poses risks to their health.

Often those who have a body mass index of over 35 have a hard time losing weight through exercise and diets alone. Studies show that weight loss drugs can help an individual lose between 5-10% of his individual weight.

Weight loss medications work two ways, they either inhibit the absorption of fat during the digestive process or they suppress the dieter’s appetite. Some of the medication that suppresses the appetite are: sibutramine, phentermine, metamphetamine, and phendimetrazine tartrate. Orlistat on the other hand, lowers the absorption of fat by as much as 30%.

These drugs have various side effects. Some of the side effects are nausea, dry mouth, constipation, high blood pressure, bloating, diarrhea, and dizziness.

Orlistat can prohibit the absorption of certain vitamins that is why doctors usually prescribe vitamin supplements to prevent deficiencies. Doctors also advise patients to engage in some form of exercise to maximize weight loss.

To be sure that the medication won’t have any bad effects to your health, consult a doctor before taking it. Some of these medications may not work as effectively when taken with other medications. The doctor will be able to determine how long you will need to take the drugs and how often. The doctor will also monitor your progress and make recommendations.

Weight loss medications were not designed for lifetime use. These drugs were created to aid in weight loss. Some were created for a maximum of 12-weeks use. There are still no studies to determine the effects of long-term use of these drugs. Once you have lost enough weight you must work hard to keep the weight off. Dieters fail to lose weight when they don’t exercise sensible eating. Some people think that the weight loss drugs should take care of all the calories they consume and therefore they shouldn’t gain weight anymore. Weight loss drugs do not work this way. Abusing weight loss medications can result in serious repercussions. They may result in weight loss but they can also cause heart problems and other medical problems. That is why these drugs just like most medications should be taken under the supervision of a doctor.
