In both procedures, 5 small incisions are made on the abdomen. Each incision is no longer than half a centimeter. After the incisions are made small surgical instruments are used to operate on the stomach. With this type of surgical procedure, there is less pain and scarring involved.
In Roux-en-Y, only about a third of the stomach is left to remain functional. The rest is bypassed. In the adjustable gastric band procedure an adjustable band is used to cinch part of the stomach so that a small portion remains functional.
This is not a surgery that is recommended to just anyone. It is done only to obese patients whose efforts to lose weight by dieting and exercising have failed. Obesity is already considered a serious medical risk and A person is obese when he is more than 100 pounds overweight or when he has a body mass index higher than 35. A medical professional should be able to compute your body mass index and determine if you are qualified to undergo this procedure.
With this procedure, a client is guaranteed weight loss because only a very small part of the stomach is left to function. This means the food intake is severely limited. Usually, the stomach will only be able to take in a cup of food and no more. Even if you want to take in more food, it is just physically impossible.
After the surgery, the patient experiences dramatic weight loss. A qualified medical practitioner will guide the patient with the amount and types of food that can be consumed. In the beginning, this can be a torturous experience as consuming very little amounts of food needs getting used to. Also, you must make sure that you get enough sufficient vitamins and nutrients despite the limitations in your diet.
Apart from the weight loss, there are also numerous health benefits of undergoing surgery. Diseases such as diabetes become easier to cure. Other healthcare problems that are associated with obesity such as high cholesterol levels or heart diseases can also be avoided.
After a successful operation, a patient usually requires undergoing an abdominal plastic surgery to remove the excess skin on the abdomen. Because the weight loss happens really fast, there are usually skin folds left on the abdomen and other parts of the body.
